Absolute rate coeff%zients for the reactions of isobutane with atomic Zr and neutral diatomic ZrO have been measured in the gas phase, using a fast-flow reactor apparatus. Second-order rate coefficients of ( 1.2 k 0.5) x 1 O-" cm3 s-' for Zr atoms and ( 1.1 &OS) x 1O-1z cm3 s-' for ZrO were obtained, indicating that both species are significantly reactive with isobutane. These results represent the first observation of alkane reactivity with a ground-state diatomic transition metal oxide and of unstrained alkane reactivity with ground-state Zr atoms.
