✦ Synopsis

The application of the jellium model and the resulting quantum shell structure for metal clusters is examined in the light of theoretical calculations and experimental observations. Objections to the jellium model by Rappes, Schar, Riidi and Schumacher appear to be based on misunderstandings of the model and on inadequate experiments.

## Abstract In this work, we analyze the geometry and electronic structure of the [X~__n__~M~3~]^__n__βˆ’2^ species (M = Be, Mg, and Ca; X = Li, Na, and K; __n__ = 0, 1, and 2), with special emphasis on the electron delocalization properties and aromaticity of the __cyclo__‐[M~3~]^2βˆ’^ unit.
