β¦ Synopsis
Normal aliphatic carboxylic acids and ketones obtained from the extraction of Taimylyr (Lensky basin, USSR) or Matagan (Irkutsky basin, USSR) sapropelitic coal with water and sodium hydroxide at elevated pressure and temperatures from 400 to 450Β°C were investigated. The compositions of these compounds were studied by i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy, and combined g.c.-m.s.. The possible pathways of aliphatic carboxylic acids and ketones formation during the fossilization process are discussed.

## Abstract A oneβstep transformation of __Ξ³__β and __Ξ΄__β(spiro)lactones into __Ξ³__,__Ξ΄__β and __Ξ΄__,__Ξ΅__βunsaturated ketones in the presence of carboxylic acids in the vapor phase at 400Β° over a supported manganese catalyst is reported for the first time. The scope of this new transformation is
