Alignment detected, state-specific photofragment yield spectroscopy is introduced and demonstrated for the S 1 photodissociation of t-butylnitrite (CH3)3CO-N=O. For this process the rotational alignment A~ ) of the nascent NO fragment is shown to depend on the initially excited vibronic state of the parent molecule.
