β¦ Synopsis
Kanpur district situated in the State of Uttar Pradesh in the Indogangetic plain lies at 25Β°26' and 26Β°58' north latitude and 79Β°31' and 80Β°34' east longitude . The total area of the district is approximately 613 .85sq. km (236 .66 sq . miles) . The elevation from the sea level is 122 m. The atmospheric temperature varies from 8Β° C to 48Β° C and that of water varies from 8Β° C to 38Β° C . It has a characteristic subtropical climate with an annual average rainfall of 1040 mm . There are three distinct seasons, the monsoon from June to September, the winter from October to February and the summer from March to June. The region is rich in algal flora and Myxophyceae form the major component of the vegetation .
So far there is no complete record of the algal flora of Kanpur district except a few . (AHMAD, 1963 ; MOHAN, 1964 ; NAIR, 1964) . The present paper deals with the algae of two ponds, namely Corporation pond, a temporary rain water pond situated in front of New Municipal Corporation building, Motijheel and Ganges pond, a permanent pond situated in open country side . Regular collections were made from July 1962 to January 1963 from both the ponds . 44 forms have been identified from a part of this collection . Out of these 29 belong to the Myxophyceae, and 15 to Chlorophyceae . The forms are found growing in alkaline waters, the pH varies from 7 .5-9 .5 .
