The third Symposium on Experimental Phycology held in September 1986 at Giit,tingcn \vas devoted to molecular and ccllular aspects of plant development. This book contains the procrodings of this meeting.

In recent years algae have been preferred for experimcnt,al studies in many fields. Simple cultivation unrlcr physiologically defined, e.g. growth limitsing conditions, bhc possibility to study cellular development and adaption processes using synchronous cultures are reasons for the increasing preference of these objects. 13 out of 20 papers deal with species of green algae (mostly Chlamydomonas, Chlorelb and Scenedesmus, Volvox and Euglena). This speakes cleiirly of this intention. The ecological and economical relevance of algae and the outstanding diversity within the many different algal classes are not of such a great interest.
