✦ Synopsis

1873-1950)

, a high school mathematics teacher in Worcester, Massachusetts, educated at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and at Clark University, was fascinated by the challenge of constructing physical models of polyhedra. This interest brought him into contact with a wide variety of users and observers of mathematics, from the most sophisticated to the very naive. A study of the reactions to Wheeler's work sheds light on several significant issues in the history of mathematics in America in the first half of the 20th century, especially the strained relations within the hierarchy of mathematical educators, from school teachers to researchers
