โฆ Synopsis
This book is really a companion volume to the Nuclear Series and perhaps suffers somewhat by being published so much later. It deals with 4 main aspects of the subject : (I) thl absorption spectrum in the infrared and Raman spectrum, (2) the absorption spectrum in the visible and near ultraviolet regions and fluorescence spectra, (3) the photochemistry of uranyl compounds, (4) the possible electronic structure of some typical uranyl compounds.
Work published before 1949 is critically reviewed and presented together with an adequate bibliography. Work published between rg4g-rgsg whilst being reasonably well covered is not nearly so well reviewed, but the bibliography is adequate. After rg6o however the subject is only sparsely covered.
The book is written in a semi-historical manner which clearly shows the magnitude of problems and how the experimental results have been utilized. It is perhaps not so easy to use this work as a reference as might be desired owing to the historical presentation.
However, a 'very clear picture is given of most aspects of the subject which can be further augmented by reference to the bibliography.
