โœฆ Synopsis

located at the facilities of Gas Turbine Technologies SpA (GTT), which is part of Siemens' Turbo Services Network, in fulfilment of a collaboration agreement signed last year [FCB, December].

The SOFC unit is grid-connected, and is presently delivering approximately 100 kWe. The system is expected to provide heating and cooling for the facility's buildings after integration with district HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) in early fall.

The CHP100 system was previously installed in Westervoort, the Netherlands for two years, and then in Essen, Germany [FCB, September 2001] where, after more than 20 000 h of operation, it set the world operating record for an SOFC system. It remains the world's longestoperating SOFC. Prior to its installation at GTT, the system was refurbished at the Siemens Science and Technology Center in Pittsburgh.

The Turin project has two major objectives: to provide GTT with installation, operational and servicing experience with SOFC systems, so that it is prepared to support the Italian fuel cell marketplace; and to extend life-testing of SOFCs of varying pedigrees. Indeed, the fuel cell module includes some of the original cells with more than 16 000 h of operation, as well as some new cells, plus -as a test of the ability to recycle SOFCs -a number of cells that have experienced varying operating durations and conditions. Once the cells are fully conditioned -which takes about a month -GTT will carry out a defined test plan.
