โฆ Synopsis
The Center for Research and Education in Tropical Agriculture (CATIE), Costa Rica, is the premier institution in agroforestry research training and education in Latin America, and most agroforestry professionals in Latin America were, and still are, trained at CATIE. Additionally, forestry faculties in some Latin American universities have undergraduate courses in agroforestry and offer opportunities to present theses on agroforestryrelated subjects for MS and PhD degrees. A 1982 survey on university-level agroforestry education in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru showed that at that time most faculties had no organized programs in agroforestry. A 1988 updating of the information from Brazil indicated that although some universities had since introduced agroforestry courses, the majority still had no substantial interest in it. In existing agroforestry educational programs, there is room for broadening the scope of curriculum content. As regards training in agroforestry in Latin America, CATIE continues to be the foremost institution.
