✦ Synopsis

Raman spectra from samples of Pb12, made by allowing colloidal microcrystallites of the layered material to aggregate into a solid, display sharp, low-frequency bands with anomalously high intensity. Virtually absent are the intralayer breathing and shearing modes, prominent in bulk Pb12. These features are consistent with a loosely packed, highly disordered solid composed of short microcrystalline stacks with lateral dimensions similar to those of the colloid in suspension.
