The book contains 11 chapters contributed by leading authorities, each reviewing a particular aspect of research on nicotine including human dependency, animal dependency, the central pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and the effects on synaptic transmission in the brain. The final chapter considers the psychological literature which tries to account for chronic nicotine use in humans.

This detailed collection clearly shows the development of knowledge and interest in nicotine from that of a controversial, deleterious substance to a useful investigative and possible therapeutic agent, as well as providing new insight into ways to proceed in assisting with smoking cessation.
