Romantic relationships in early and middle adolescence frequently appear in fiction and autobiographies. In some cases they are described as superficial or awkward and are understood in terms of an experience rather than as a relationship (Furman and Wehner, this volume). Dunphy's (1963) pioneering work described how early interactions with the opposite sex ohen occur within the context of a crowd, thereby enabling girls and boys to develop a sense of comfort following the previous years of gender segregation (Leaper and Anderson, this volume). Yet such encounters, which in many cases are of short dura-
