Nairobi, Afrique-Orientale anglaise, 1919 : le Kenya est encore une contrée peuplée d'animaux sauvages et de tribus guerrières. Séduits par l'immensité et la beauté du pays qu'ils ont découvert lors de la Grande Guerre, les colons britanniques arrivent pour bâtir un monde nouveau. Lord Valentin Traverton s'installe à Nyéri, crée une plantation de café et fait construire une somptueuse demeure : Bellatu ; tandis que Grace, sa sœur médecin, fait édifier un dispensaire et une école pour les Africains...
