Abstract
This paper examines the context to developments in electronic publishing as it affects business transformation within the science publisher, Elsevier Science, especially in relation to developing activities for technology professionals in industry. The key changes likely to affect such publishers in taking advantage of Web opportunities are discussed and then the business planning and implementation process for innovation units, focused mainly on engineers' needs, are described as a case study demonstrating how the larger trends in the publishing industry are changing directions in a specific organization. Finally the adoption of an innovation culture is seen to pave the way for development through action learning and increased involvement of the market in the future.
