โฆ Synopsis
Bentonite-soil mixtures have become widely used y as compacted clay liners (CCL) at waste disposal sites in Japan. The efficiency in long-term sealing ability of the CCL is influenced by geotechnical conditions and the mineralogical properties of the mixtures used in construction, in addition to the hydro-geological conditions after construction of waste disposal sites. Characterizing the microstructure and assessing factors affecting the CCL efficiency are essential. In this study, X-ray CT observations of the microstructure of bentonite-quartz samples using Wyoming Na-smectite and quartz sand were performed and near-infrared spectroscopic measurements of the smectite-water complexes of the samples is carried out. The relationships of the microstructure and the permeability of samples after permeability tests with distilled water and CaCl 2 aqueous solution are described.
