✦ Synopsis
Yoctoseconds and More than Days". As may be expected, Quack makes the provocative statement (p. 781) that "Considering the possible time scales of molecular processes, it becomes clear that femtosecond resolution can only be a short time intermediate level in research and our goal must be to approach the yoctosecond and beyond". (You will have to read the chapter to find out what a yoctosecond is.) This may be compared with the editors' statement in the Preface (p. vi) that "...the femtosecond regime [is] an ultimate timescale..." There are no faster timescales for nuclear motion than femtoseconds (authors' emphasis)."
The two-volume set is well produced, with a 46-page subject index, a complete authors' index, and an appendix containing biographical sketches, photographs, and complete addresses of most of the contributing authors. Individual chapters are receipt-dated, with most of these being early 1994; thus the coverage is more up-to-date than is usual for typical edited volumes. The authors and editors are to be commended for producing a timely and useful, nearly encyclopedic treatment of this important and rapidly developing field. Unfortunately, the list price of DM 398 places it beyond the reach of all but the most wealthy individual purchasers, and it is likely that many institutional libraries, facing ever increasing pressures on their acquisition budget, may also forego purchase of these volumes.
