✦ Synopsis

Susceptibility, resistivity and X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on single crystals of BiESr2CaCu208+ 8. Very sharp (0.5 K width) superconducting transition temperatures as low as 55 K have been reached in the overdoped part of the phase diagram. Anneals in low oxygen pressures have allowed us to access the entire underdoped region of the phase diagram. The samples have been reversibly changed from a high-temperature superconductor to an insulator.

Josephson tunneling I-V characteristics have been observed in break j unctions of oxygen-annealed Bi2Sr2CaCu2Os (Bi-2212 ) single crystals, with foR. ~ 21.3 mV, and with a sharp quasipartiele edge at 2zt ~ 2 × 20 mV. This demonstrates that low values of the IoR. product, thus far as observed in HTS
