tion, the numerous formulas and numerical results will be found useful.
An elaboration of the very many special topics covered is quite outside the scope of this review. Some which this reviewer found particularly interesting included the contact pressures under elliptical punches with fiat or rounded bases when pressed against an elastic half-space. Not only are the pressures calculated, but a thorough investigation is given of the stresses in the halfspace, including the technically important shearing stresses. Perhaps the contents of the book are best described by quoting the titles of the eight chapters: I) The Fundamental Equations of the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity; 2) The Infinite Elastic Medium and the Elastic Half Space; 3) The Equilibrium of an Elastic Layer; 4) Equilibrium of a Thick Plate ;5) Three-Dimensional Contact Problems; 6) The Deformation of a Symmetrically Loaded Elastic Sphere; 7) The Deformation of a Symmetrically Loaded Circular Cylinder; 8) The General Problem of the Equilibrium of an Elastic Sphere.
The translation and format are excellent and the cost is not excessive for a book of this magnitude. Every elastieian should possess a copy of this superb work.
