✦ Synopsis

The book brings together the results of a series of research projects carried out mainly at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, sponsored principally by the Office of Naval Research. There is a total of 26 authors named in the 11 chapters. The authors state that the four relevant research areas that were identified are:

(1) the dialogue management system, (2) the dialogue author, (3) the applications programmer, (4) the end-user interface.

These four research areas are addressed in 11 chapters, as follows:

  1. Multi-disciplinary research in human-computer dialogue design. This is an introductory chapter of 8 pages, outlining the philosophy of the research.
