✦ Synopsis

Ceramics research within Industrial Research Limited is underpinned by expertise in ceramic and mineral chemistry developed throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Much of this earlier research was conceived on the basis of exploitation of indigenous resources using these established strengths in ceramic chemistry. This research platform has rapidly expanded in more recent years with a shift towards the development of forming and body fabrication technologies with subsequent microstructural and physical property measurements, using structural science tools such as Rietveld powder crystallography, solid state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) and ion beam analysis (IBA). The team's research now encompasses a full spectrum of enabling skills and technologies to effectively transfer materials research to industry. The skill base of the team reflects the multidisciplinary nature of this research.

The current program is funded principally through the New Zealand Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST), and also by various industry partners. The 50:50 industry assistance provided through
