✦ Synopsis

An IBM developed algorithm was adopted in 1977 as a national standard: the Data Encryption Standard (DES).Although the entire algorithm was made available to the public, the design considerations were not published. Many people speculated that the lack of disclosure was due to some 'trap door' or hidden weakness in DES.The purpose of this paper is to dispel this notion by (1) discussing the concepts of differential cryptanalysis and (2) deriving the DES design concepts to block attacks based on differential cryptanalysis. Also discussed are events leading up to the DES design as well as methods to strengthen DES.
