Wang et al. describe how a hyperbranched thin fi lm facilitates conformal surface sol-gel deposition of iron oxide onto diatom biosilica templates, which can be converted into a nanocrystalline magnetite coating (see selected-area electron diffraction pattern on left of this frontispiece image). These magnetite-coated diatom frustules show signifi cant specifi c adsorption of arsenic from water in a circulating fi lter system.
