✦ Synopsis

The adsorption of SO, on clean Cu(700) and Cu(700)-c(2x 2)-O surfaces at room temperature has been studied using high resolution core-level photoelectron spectroscopy.

On both surfaces, two types of atomic S and two types of SO, are found as shown by their well separated S 2p binding energies. On the Cuf 700)-c(2x 2)-0 surface, pre-adsorbed oxygen inhibits the SO, decomposition and accelerates the SO, reaction with the substrate which benefits SO, formation.
