✦ Synopsis

The double layer capacitance was measured on gold-bead electrodes in N,-stirred 2 N Na,SO, solution as a function of the pre-treatment of the gold surface. Such measurements are sensitive to small quantities of adsorbed oxygen. It is suggested that oxygen may be adsorbed in rather small quantities on gold at potentials as low as 800 mV us Ha (1 atm) in the same solution. The observed values of the capacitance agree with those in the literature. If Au,O, is formed on the gold surface and then reduced, abnormally high capacitance values are observed, because such a surface has been greatly roughened and the true current density is much lower than that calculated. The voltage-sweep methods as described in the literature may not be sensitive enough to detect the small quantities of oxygen adsorbed on gold in the region around 900 mV.
