โฆ Synopsis
This article describes the adsorption of human serum. globulin (y-globulin) from aqueous solution on mesocarbon microbeads. The mesocarbon microbeads were treated by heat and/or gaseous plasma treatment. The mesocarbon microbeads heated at 200, 500, 700, and 1000" had a hydrophobic surface as well as that of the untreated one. The polar surface functional groups were introduced on mesocarbon microbeads by an oxygen or a nitrogen plasma treatment. Accordingly, their dispersion properties in aqueous solution were highly improved.
The adsorption of y-globulin depended on the surface characteristics of the mesocarbon microbeads, the pH values, and ionic strength of solution. The adsorption on non-heat-treated and heat-treated mesocarbon microbeds was presumably governed by the hydrophobic bonding between them and yglobulin. On the other hand, electrostatic interaction affected the adsorption on mesocarbon microbeads treated by the plasma. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the hydrophobic domains in the surface of mesocarbon microbeads treated by the plasma play an important role in adsorption, particularly on heat-treated mesocarbon microbeads at higher temperatures.
