We will review the current understandings of the pathophysiology of asthma and discuss the many adrenergic agents available for the treatment of acute severe asthma. Emphasis will be placed on the newer beta-2 adrenergic agonists and their delivery by nebulization. The latter may soon become the initial treatment of choice of acute asthma in the United States.
