โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Accumulation of body fat occurs when lipogenesis (LG) predominates over lipid mobilization (LM) and utilization of fatty acids. Investigations in vitro revealed:

subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese subjects as a group has the same capacity of LM as that of controls. LM may be affected adversely by obesity in the direct antecedence and impaired glucose tolerance.

In the indicators of LG no significant differences were found. Serum of obese subjects had a lower antilipolytic activity and there was a higher catecholamine production, in particular of noradrenalin. This stimulated hypothetical reflections on a compensatory reaction induced by a high ratio of body fat.

As regards the role of hyperplasia and hypertrophy of adipose tissue in obesity it may be stated, based on more than 100 examinations, that during obesity not only the volume of fat cells increases but also their number, whereby latter phenomenon predominates.
