Abstract
Reports of malignancies developing during immunosuppressive therapy have been difficult to interpret because of concurrent prednisone administration in all cases, and organ transplantation in most. This communication reports an adenocarcinoma of the lung in a 39βyearβold woman with lupus nephritis who had been treated only with azathioprine during the previous 4 years. This suggests that corticosteroids and transplanted antigens may not be prerequisites for the development of a malignancy during immunosuppressive therapy.
