✦ Synopsis

A monoitaconamic acid was synthesized by reaction of 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and itaconic anhydride in methyl isobutyl ketone. It was characterized by IR, elemental analysis, acid value and IH-NMRo On heating at 200-210°C, it underwent thermal imidization followed by Michael addition involving the~,@-unsaturated double bond and the NH 2 group present in the molecule lea~ing to formation of a polymer. This polyimide was stable up to 270°C (2.5% weight loss) and underwent rapid degradation above 410oc.
