Reaction of t-butyllithium with meso-tetraphenylporphyrin gives two di-tbutyl-dihydroporphyrins, the addition occuring at positions 2,3 or 5,10. 5,10-di-tbutyl-5, lO-dihydro-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin adopts a helicoidal structure as shown by its X-ray crystal structure.
