furthermore found that cell divisions of purified CD34+CD45RAi*CD71 ~ cells in vitro is associated with a predictable decrease (37 base pairs per division) in mean telomere length in the cultured progeny of the cells. Taken together, these observations strongly suggest that the proliferative potential of hematopoietic (stem) ceils is not unlimited and that loss of telomeric DNA during successive cell divisions contributes to the loss of this potential. From a practical point of view, these observations favor the use of relatively large numbers of adult hematopoietic cells for transplantation or the use of fetal or cord blood cells. 1.
