✦ Synopsis

We present an adaptive wavelet method to integrate the velocityvorticity formulation of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a penalisation technique to handle efficiently solid boundaries of arbitrary shape. We demonstrate the validity of this method, called coherent vortex simulation (CVS), to compute the flow around an impulsively started cylinder at high Reynolds number and compare the results with a classical vortex method. ο›™ 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

## Abstract In the present study a dynamic grid adaptation (DGA) algorithm is utilized for predicting flow around a circular cylinder in sub‐critical flow regime at a Reynolds number of 1.4Γ—10^5^. The reason for adopting a DGA algorithm is the unsteadiness of the flow field which makes a convention
