✦ Synopsis

Modeling and simulation of an analog/digital hardware system for system identification is described. Specifically, the operation of a charge-coupled device (CCD) transversal filter system identification device, utilizing the clipped least mean square (LMS) algorithm for tap weight updating, is discussed.

The rational for the use of the clipped IX algorithm is delineated, and the results of simulation of the system are presented for white noise.

Specific effects modeled and addressed are the loss of charge from cell to cell as the input signal is transferred along the CCD delay line, the calculation of the tap weights and the effect of offset of these weights, the speed of convergence of the system for the clipped LMS algorithm, and the effect of low pass filtering of the input signal.

Application of this configuration to the telephone system is described with specific reference to echo cancellation in long distance telephone networks, Keywords.
