β¦ Synopsis
This paper is concerned with the control of important polymerization properties in a batch solution polymerization reactor of methylmethacrylate. Properties such as weight average molecular weight or monomer conversion are controlled using an advanced adaptive pole-assignment controller whose performance is compared to that of a generalized minimum variance controller and a fixed gain PID controller. Simulation and experimental results on the batch polymer reactor demonstrate the need for fast on-line measurements in the polvmerization industry as well as the usefulness of this adaptive poleassignment control algorithm. _ _ CES

A nonlinear control strategy--input/output linearizing by nonlinear state feedback--is suitable for trajectory tracking in batch processes. But based closely on the system model, the controller is sensitive to model parameter errors, which limit its application. In this paper, a technique of adaptiv
The problem of controlling the reactor to follow an optimal path calculated from the parameter estimates is considered. It is shown that the optimal path has an intrinsic stability which can be exploited in various ways to ensure near optimal control. When measurements of both composition and temper
Although reactant addition induces unavoidable temperature changes in semi-batch reactors, it is shown that adaptive-predictive techniques may offer a means of balancing them successfully. To this end, appropriate data filtering must be integrated to the estimation algorithm, so that parameters rema
In this article a highly exothermic batch polymerization reactor is considered. The reactor is simplified as a mixing tank with the internal heat generation treated as a disturbance. A fuzzy-hybrid-PID-feedback (FH-PID) control structure is developed in which the output of fuzzy hybrid portion is us
