✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Butyl nitrite is present in consumer products subject to abuse by inhalation. When inhaled, intense peripheral vasodilation and tachycardia ensue, described by users as a β€˜rush’. When ingested, toxic sequelae include methemogloginemia and hypokinetic anoxia. The median lethal oral dose to rats of this compound is, with 95% confidence, 83 Β± 3.5 mg kg^βˆ’1^.

It is known that sodium nitrite and dimethylamine are toxic compounds, which may react to form dimethylnitrosamine in the gastro-intestinal tract, a much more toxic compound and a powerful cancerogen. The aim of the present work is the investigation of toxicity in young rats, caused by daily intake

Toxicity data of 82 compounds, tested in both B sub-acute and a sub-chronic study, were evaluated to find out whether it is possible to substitute a sub-acute for a sub-chronic study without losing quantitative information. The no-effect level (NEL) and the minimal-effect level (MEL) were used as th
