recurrence may reflect surgical implantation from the extrarectal margin or from intraluminal tumour cells',*. With the aim of reducing surgical implantation, we have used high-dose-rate intraluminal brachytherapy (HDRIBT) before operation since 19863. We have not experienced any local recurrence suggestive of surgical implantation in 57 patients who received HDRIBT before rectal resection and coloanal anastomosis.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major health problem in the UK. Its incidence is difficult to ascertain as many cases go undetected, but it is probable that about 3 per cent of the population will have a DVT at some stage in their lives'. The most serious immediate risk associated with DVT is pulmon
