An adult male farmer with chronic active hepatitis and cirrhosis despite previous circulating anti-HBs antibodies was studied. No markers of other hepatotropic viral infection were observed. HBV DNA was detected in serum by PCR and was characterized further by restriction fragment length polymorphis

โฆ Synopsis
Abstract
We report a patient with antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (antiโHBs) but no antibodies to other hepatitis B virus components, who developed acute symptomatic type B hepatitis. The possible explanations for this unusual serological pattern are 1) the antibodyโpositive status, which developed against only a subdeterminant of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), arose naturally or as the result of crossโreaction with a variety of antigens; and 2) seroconversion to antiโHBs occurred in response to surface antigen of a mutant strain of hepatitis B virus (HBV). This antiโHBs positivity, in the absence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen, does not provide natural immunization against HBV infection, and so is not protective. Individuals who are positive to antiโHBs antibody alone which is not elicited by HBV vaccine, should be vaccinated against possible HBV infection.

A total of 130 acute HBsAg-positive subjects were tested for the presence of delta hepatitis antibodies (anti-HD). Of the 130 subjects, 56 were females and 74 were males. All patients were individuals attending the two teaching hospitals, i.e., Parirenyatwa and Harare Central hospitals. All the ser

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBs antibodies (anti-HBs) may coexist in certain chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Studies of hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) dual infection are limited. Most are small, conducted outside the United States, and compare dual infection with HCV monoinfection. The goal of this study was to characterize HBV/HCV dual infection in a large multiethnic, matched, case-contr
