Abstract
The dimorphic claws of the Californian snapping shrimp, Alpheus californiensis, contain an opener and a closer muscle. The closer muscle in the smaller pincer claw is composed of fibers with short and intermediate sarcomere lengths, whereas the closer muscle in the larger snapper claw is composed of fibers with long sarcomeres. Electrophoretic analysis of actomyosin extracts from the closer muscle in each claw revealed some common components. However, the snapper contains two additional components with molecular weights of 25 and 100 daltons.
