✦ Synopsis
Unlike a member of a truss structure, when a rod is used for bearing a dynamic load with frequencies close to or above its fundamental frequency, its longitudinal vibration characteristics need to be investigated. An unconventional algorithm, Explicit Longitudinal Vibration Control (ELVC), has been developed specifically or longitudinal load transmissibility control. The physics of the longitudinal rod vibration was demonstrated first by analytical modelling, and then the performance of the ELVC algorithm was compared with that of the well-known algorithm, Independent Modal Space Control (IMSC). More specifically, the performance of single and multiple actuators for each algorithm were compared for both impulsive and persistent disturbances. It is shown that multiple actuators are required for effective control, especially of persistent disturbances. When only one actuator is considered for simple implementation, the ELVC algorithm showed performance superior to that of IMSC for persistent disturbances.
