Sumnary: Mixed carboxylic a-bromotoluoyl anhydrides were activated by silver tetrafluoroborate through intramolecular cyclization and reacted with alcohols or thiols giving the corresponding esters or thiol esters in good yileds with the elimination of phthalide.
