✦ Synopsis

Galvanostatic transients were recorded for anodic dissolution of high purity aluminium in neutral chloride solutions. All transients, except at very low current densities (below 50 PA cm-'), are characterized by an overshoot and a sudden decay of potential to the potential plateau of active anodic dissolution Initial portions of the transients were analyzed for electrode capacitance and oxide growth. Sudden decay is interpreted in terms of adsorption of chloride and its effect on the structure and conductivtty of the oxide film.

The activity of water in {x 1 AlCl 3 + (1 -x 1 )H 2 O} has been determined by measurement of vapour pressures in the temperature range (300 to 342) K, and the molality range (0.421 to 3.033) mol • kg -1 . The behaviour of the solution is described by the Pitzer model. The [Al(OH)(H 2 O) 5 ] 2+ in th
