โฆ Synopsis
It will be recalled that one of the objectives of this series of studies was to learn more about the mechanism by which mustard gas (H) produces injurious effects on cells.
Direct chemical studies have accounted for inhibition of carbohydrate metabolism on tlie basis of reaction with intracellular enzymes but have not revealed the nature of the reaction responsible for inhibition of growth, nor cause of cell death. I t seemed worthwhile therefore, to make a quantitative comparison between the various effects produced with different doses of H with the idea of inferring whether there exists any causal relation between inhibition of carbohydrate metabolism and inhibition of growth. It appeared to be of value also to determine the effects produced on yeast by a variety of other toxic agents, from which, by analogy, further information could be obtained on tlie mechanism of H poisoning.

Recent experiments (Kinsey and Grant 111, '47) have shown that slightly over half of the available chloroethyl groups of mustard gas (H) fixed by yeast cells combine with glutathione. While the average growth rate of yeast is reduced to about 5% of normal, and eventually most of the cells die with d
