and we are now investigating the effect of placing the electrodes over the dorsal skin parallel t o the spine so as t o stimulate the relevant dermatomes closer t o the spinal column.

In this trial, the inactive TENS machines applied t o control patients were absolutely identical in appearance to the active machines. They possessed a red light which-glowed when the machine was switched on, even though it delivered no current t o the patient. Most control patients genuinely believed that their inactive machines were actually working and we believe that there was a large placebo effect. This may be the reason for the result we obtained which failed t o show an effect for TENS.
