✦ Synopsis

For the past 14 months Plug Power has been providing backup power to a remote cell tower in Elgin, Scotland in collaboration with FDT and its customer, the mobile communications company Orange [FCB, May 2004]. The cell site is situated in a forest 450 m above sea level at the Huntly Nordic Ski Center training site, and provides telecoms coverage between Rhynie and Elgin. The system has provided more than 2750 h of backup power to the site since installation.

FDT is a market leader in providing inspection and testing services to the mobile telecoms sector. The company sees the supply of fuel cells as a logical extension of its existing inspection, design and construction capabilities, as well as a reliable, cost-effective way to provide backup power for its customers.

'Our work with FDT and Orange over the past year has been very successful, and we are excited about formalizing our relationship with FDT and making fuel cell technology available to all mobile telecoms service providers,' comments Mark Sperry, chief marketing officer for Plug Power.
