published approximately 80 technical papers, mainly in the field of phase transformations. His principal contributions concern the dilfusional transformations, starting with the treatment of eutectic and eutectoid reactions; the effect of alloying elements on transformations in steel; and spinodal decomposition. where his MIT thesis in 1956 started the modem development. He has also been active in the fields of thermodynamics of alloy systems and solidification. Professor Hillert graduated as a chemical engineer from Chalmers Technical University in 1947. and obtained his Doctor of Science degree in physical metallurgy at MIT' in 1956. He conducted research at the Swedish Institute for Metals Research until 1961 when he became professor and head of the Physical Metallurgy Division at the RoyaJ Institute of Technology. He served as head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy there from 1963 to 1967. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1973.
