✦ Synopsis
Polymers of acrylic acid with uniform polystyrene side chains were synthesized by copolymerization of polystyrene macromer with acrylic acid. The products were purified by extractions with water and toluene and characterized with GPC, i.r., TEM and membrane osmometry. The average grafting number decreased with increasing polymerization time. The graft copolymers showed good emulsifying property and high water absorbency and behaviour in dilute solution like a polyelectrolyte. The intermolecular complex membrane formed by this graft copolymer and poly(ethyl acrylate) with uniform polyoxyethylene side-chains behaved like a chemical valve, since its permeability can be controlled reversibly by changing pH.
