emission. radius of the contraction mm oo the side of the specimen and load-bad p&t displacement were measured during fracture of siogk edge ~~4ched specimens cmtaining fatigue cracks of di@erent kngths. It was found that there exists a three-fold cmelation between formation of a contraction mtkeabk aconstic emission and deviation from liity on the k~d-load point dkpbcanent curves. %%ress intensity factor K was evaluated from the extent of cmtraction oo the specimen surface and related to the acoustic emission total count. A cmrectiom for K was made to accouot for the considerable plasticity at the crack tip. Emally, a model for the formation and development of the plastic aod cootraction zones is fornlulated.
