The solwtochromic mcrocyanine dye I is found by spectroscopic techniques to have o pK, = 8.57 in rbc ground state and pKl = 1.85 in the lowest es&cd singler state. The validity of the Fiirstcr cycle for compounds of this sort is discussed in terms of molecular distortions occurring upon esci Wion that arc indicated both spectrally and by quanrum chemical calculaGon.
