✦ Synopsis

Previous studies on the distribution and characteristics of the phosphatases of erythrocytes apparently have been limited to mammalian species. Except for a single observation on the phosphatase of pigeon cells, recorded by Roche and Latrcille ('34), we have not found in the literature any mention of the phosphatases of the erythrocytes of lower vertebrates. I n connection with studies on the distribution of acid-soluble phosphorus and phytase in the plasma and erythrocytes of various lower vertebrates (Rapoport and Guest, '41, and Rapoport, Leva and Guest, '41) we had occasion to investigate the phosphatase activity of the blood cells of geese, chickens, pigeons, turtles, snakes, frogs, and fish; in some of these the nucleophosphatase activity also was determined. The resultant data are presented here as a preliminary survey in the hope that, although incomplete, they may stimulate interest and lead to more extended studies in this field.

The homology of branchial arch segments in salamanders has been a matter of controversy since the last century. Many investigators term the most medial paired elements of salamander branchial arches "ceratobranchials" and the next distal paired elements "epibranchials." This suggests that the first

The role of bile acids in the biliary secretion of alkaline phosphatase was studied. Rats with external bile fistulae were drained for 4 hr. After 2 hr, bile acid secretion fell progressively. Alkaline phosphatase secretion also decreased progressively during the period of drainage, suggesting that
